We have been fortunate to have escaped cold weather to this point. However, this is Calgary and we all know Mother Nature will not forget that we need to be reminded about cold weather, snow, icy conditions and the challenges we normally expect in winter.

From the school’s point of view, December is a relatively short month. There are 15 instructional days prior to the Winter Break. There is enough time, however, to reflect on the many great things that happen around Riverbend School.

On 08 November 2023, the Grade 4 classes led the school in an amazing Remembrance Day ceremony. It was meaningful in both the ceremony and the artwork which decorated the gym reflecting the students understanding of remembrance and the poppy.

For the first time, students had Fall Break! This brief respite from class was introduced into the school calendar this year and particularly staff and students shared that they enjoyed those few days off to get their minds off school and relax.

On 23-24 November 2023, the school hosted Parent Conferences. A very large number of parents attended and shared in all the exciting learning that is taking place in the classrooms and in the school. Thank you for coming and being an active part of our school community!

December is a busy month. Cookie Dough deliveries, Cookie Dough pizza party, Winter Singalong and a Professional Learning Day… and that is just the first week! With Popcorn Recess and our usual monthly pizza lunch, the days to the Winter Break will fly by!

Throughout December, the school will be conducting a food drive in support of the Veterans Association Food Bank. It is sad that many Canadian veterans are struggling after their service to our country and the staff at the Food Bank stated that the Winter/Christmas season sees the highest demand for their service. The Food Bank provided six large boxes and I hope to see all those boxes filled to support this amazing organization!

Thank you to all for helping to make Riverbend School a wonderful place to be and to learn! Staff, students and parents/guardians are all contributors to a successful school.

December is also the time to reflect on what we have, how we treat each other and how each one of us can make our community and the world better. It is the time to be caring and considerate. It is the time to be generous with those who have less than we do. It is the time to be respectful and kind.

Wishing you and yours a wonderful and restful Winter Break!
